Any advice for recently graduated anthropologists searching for strategy/planning jobs in NYC?

This May it will be a year since I graduated with double honors as a cultural anthropology major. Unfortunately, the new, New York economy forced a hiring freeze on the agency where I interned (and did incredibly well according to my supervisors).

While those who interview me and review my CV have been quick to comment on my "impressive and diverse background", intelligence, and eagerness to learn and contribute beyond expectation, my constant networking and job searching has yet to produce an opportunity.

Everyday I track news, new business, job openings, trends, etc in hopes of finding a lead. I also have a blog that I've been maintaining and filling with ideas and thoughts that I've written down over the years as well as reactions to current events and recent thoughts. I would rather keep writing, thinking, and participating in the conversation than settling for an entry level opportunity outside of my already broad range of interests.

I am worried that if I don't find the right position before April, I will have to downgrade my hopes of starting in strategy/planning at an advertising or branding agency.

I am committed to working in a shop where intelligent innovation, unique thinking, impeccable production, and driven people are some of their everyday expectations.

Any advice or guidance would be invaluable...

Thanks so much to everyone who has continued to add value to this first discussion! So many young recent graduates lack any access to mere hints of real world advice and this medium has been invaluable for me (and, hopefully, for others who share my predicament). I hope all of you will continue to share your thoughts here!

I also have a NEW TOPIC up for discussion.
I cannot help but add my two cents: Entry-level strategy jobs are practically non-existent. Absolutely consider (paid or non) internships and account management opportunities. Look for agencies who value career development & have a strong strategy department (even if you are not accepting a job within that group). Look outside of NYC if you're willing... NY is fun, but not as many agencies take the time to train. It's about more than getting "in", but about being eager to learn and then having resources available to teach you.

I personally began in a planning internship, and then accepted an entry-level position as an AE at the same agency -- they knew that I ultimately wanted to end up back in planning, but simply did not have the experience. I used my time as an AE (1.5 years) to not only do my "daytime" role in account management, but to also pitch in on new business and help the planning group with research. Every strategy group needs individuals who are smart AND hard workers -- if you can proof you both, they should welcome you into their group.
