I learnt from an experience planning director in US and another discusion on facebook (relevant to UK) that its not uncommon when the planner is gagged with the concepts, with a roll of creative brief in hand! I have experienced situation when ego blinds the objectivity but thankfully safe from such shit in current agency. U r right each creative guy is a personality, and the process is fun as long as they don't get blindly fascinated by some idea.
I love the brevity of 'the brief is not clear' on your description. More music to ear phrases for a planner can be, 'your brief is too tight' or 'to loose'. (no pun intended) My favourite is 'I have an canne winning idea in mind'? (**** your brief)
