They don't mash-ups like they used to

I was just listening the classic Grey Album by Danger Mouse (that's the dude with the big 'fro who is the genius behind funksters Gnarls Barkley, not the rodent detective 'Dangermouse 'who lives under a red postbox outside Sherlock's gaff at 221b Baker Street, which, coincidentally, doesn't exist, BBDO's offices were just off Baker St and I checked).

Anyway, the Grey Album by Danger Mouse, released in 2004 uses an a cappella version… Continue

Old Speckled Hen creates some fine-art press ads

I studied a combined Marketing and History of Art degree. Very occasionally an ad catches my eye, my ear or even my mouse cursor that actually pays attention to the art of advertising and gives a nod to it's history. This weeks Time Out had a great one-pager for the English beer 'Old Speckled Hen' that didn't involve their cartoon character naff cartoon fox (below) whom, to me, looks like he never made the Wind in the Willows auditions as he was… Continue

Photoshop for all

A free web version of Photoshop has been launched by Adobe. I used to work for the distributor of Adobe in Europe and always found that it was a respected pro brand that will now potentially go mainstream.

While the £700 full version of Photoshop is designed for trained professionals, Adobe says Photoshop Express, which it launched in a "beta" test version, is easier to learn.

Photoshop Express will be completely Web-based so… Continue

Parodying Parody

I'm a big fan of Weird Al Yankovic the self-confessed pro satirist. He's been making parodies of la musique du jour for decades (since 1979). His 'Eat it' parody of Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' is testament to this.

Weird Al Yankovic - Eat It (Michael Jackson - Beat It)

As a satirist his inspiration for his material comes from documenting the pop culture references.… Continue

The Net Feels Blue

Trendspotting has picked up on some colour research for the web. Apparently blue is the dominant colour and I would agree that the colour dominates, graphic interfaces, operating systems and social networking sites. Definitely the colour of the web.

I studied art colour theory during my art history degree and was interested in the juxtaposition of… Continue

The internet gets upholstery

Computers and their (lack of) personality.

They’re either a too-cool-for-school metallic slab (a la Apple) or a big dorky corporate box.

They haven't got bespoke, unless we're talking gamer turbo charged neon monsters.

With the customisation concept expending to everything, I ask:

Where’s the upholstery? Where’s bit to hang furry dice?

Here it is: Chumby, a user-friendly touch screen cutesy box that provides… Continue
